The verb 让 ràng is not only used in passive sentences. It also means: to let or to allow. A person of a higher rank (teacher, boss, parents, older brothers and sisters, doctors) can let, allow or induce (让 ràng) someone of a lower rank (student, worker, child, younger brother or sister, patient).
